BillHawk — the verified medical-bill auditor

Getting started

How do I audit a bill?

On the home screen, tap to start a new audit. Scan a paper bill with your camera, import a PDF from your patient portal, or pick an existing photo. BillHawk uploads it, audits every line, and shows the result — usually in 15 to 45 seconds.

How long does an audit take?

Most audits finish in 15 to 45 seconds. The app shows live progress while it works, and you can leave the screen — it keeps going in the background.

What documents can I audit?

An itemized bill (one line per charge) gets a full audit. A summary bill or an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) hides the line items, so a full audit isn't possible — BillHawk says so and drafts an itemized-bill request letter instead. Accepted formats include PDF, scans, and photos (JPEG/HEIC).

Findings & verification

What does the "Verified" badge mean?

It means BillHawk found the finding's quoted line and its dollar amount in your document, matched exactly. Verified findings are grounded in your bill's own text — not the model's paraphrase.

What about findings marked "Unverified"?

Those couldn't be matched to the document word-for-word, so they're demoted and clearly labeled. Treat them as leads worth a look, not confirmed facts.

Does BillHawk tell me I was overcharged?

No. BillHawk points out what's worth questioning and gives you the words to ask. It doesn't declare that a charge is an error or state an amount you're owed — those are resolved between you and your provider or insurer.

What is the EOB cross-check?

A Premium feature: add your Explanation of Benefits and BillHawk compares it to the bill. If the bill asks for more than your EOB says you owe, it's flagged and quoted from the EOB itself.

Letters

What letters can BillHawk write?

Itemized-bill request letters, billing-office inquiry letters built from your findings, and dispute-preparation notes when a self-pay bill exceeds a Good Faith Estimate. They're facts-only drafts you review and send in your own name — BillHawk doesn't send anything for you.

Free vs Premium

What's included free?

Your first full bill audit is free — with every finding quoted and verified, the letters for that bill, and 5 follow-up questions. No account or card required.

What does Premium add?

About 12 full audits per month, unlimited follow-up questions and letters, the EOB cross-check, and full audit history. Premium is $9.99/month or $59.99/year (the annual plan includes a 7-day free trial).

Is there a free trial?

Yes — the Premium Annual plan ($59.99/year) includes a 7-day free trial. You're only charged at the end of the trial. Cancel anytime in your Apple ID subscription settings before it ends.

How do I restore my purchase?

Open Settings inside the app and tap "Restore Purchases." This re-applies an active subscription previously purchased on this Apple ID.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Open the iOS Settings app, tap your name at the top, then tap Subscriptions. Find BillHawk and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.

Privacy

Where does my bill go?

It's sent over HTTPS to our server and to Anthropic (the AI provider) to produce the audit. On our server it lives only in memory and is deleted within 24 hours — immediately if the audit fails. The audit, your questions, and your letters are stored only on your device. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Is my health information protected?

BillHawk is a consumer app, so HIPAA doesn't apply to it; we follow the FTC Health Breach Notification Rule. Our main safeguard is architectural — your documents exist on our server only in memory, for at most 24 hours, so there's almost nothing to breach.

How do I delete my data?

Open Settings inside the app and tap "Delete My Data" to remove all local audits, questions, and letters and cancel pending reminders. Deleting the app does the same. On our side there's nothing to delete beyond the automatic 24-hour document window.
